The
market for batteries is steadily growing since its invention in 1800. Teaming
up with technology, the lifespan, effectivity, and durability of batteries
evolved.
Today,
scientists are developing nanotechnology on batteries which can open for
wonders in use. Other researches are on layered battery, redox-flow-batteries,
solid lithium batteries, cooking batteries, graphene flakes, magnesium, and
aluminium batteries.
Heavy machinery and equipment are in the wagon for being battery powered. These batteries can now be charged and used over and over for years.
The
forklift utilises heavy usage for many businesses. Like other machines,
forklifts, pallet movers and pallet stackers are now battery powered. We commonly see this
equipment in storehouses.
The
battery on these machines can last up to 1500 charging times or around five
years.
Battery
prices range from 2400 dollars and up, excluding chargers and accessories. With
this in mind, here are some ways to extend battery life for forklifts.
Charging
the Battery
The
lifespan of forklift batteries is long.
Whether
you are using lead-acid or lithium-ion, overcharging is a no-no. As the
charging goes to full capacity, unplug immediately.
It
is recommended to charge after an 8-hour shift.
Don't discharge power to less than 20% remaining. In case you are tempted to charge for a short while never do so, opportunity charging, never do so.
Remember, each charge
costs a cycle. If let's say you are using this for 1500 cycle for 5 yrs. When
charging twice a day means 2.5 years life span on the battery.
Don't interrupt charging if it's not
an emergency. See to it that
you always finish at 100%.
Fast
charging the forklift battery has negative effects. Excessive heat generated
can shorten life span.
You
can fast charge but limit it to a minimum or only in emergencies.
Don't let a discharged battery rest
for long duration, like long
weekends or holiday breaks. A discharged battery will significantly reduce the
life of the battery.
Allow good ventilation while charging.
Fluid level check
Water
acts as a critical role in maintaining the health of the battery. In each
cycle, water gets heated up and splits into hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen will
discharge at the negative plate and oxygen at the positive plate. With
time, the water level will go down. When this happens, the plates will be
exposed.
The
metal on the plates will dry out causing permanent damage. So, check the water
level always. Check
water level for new batteries every ten charges, five charges if it is old.
The amount of water to top up should only be 1/4 of an inch, just enough to
cover the plastic element protector. The extra space is for expansion while there
is evaporation at the end of charge.
Single
Point Watering kits fitted must also be topped up at the end of a charge, never
before.Always
use clean water after charging.Don't
overfill; this will promote acid loss, which eventually shortens the life span
of batteries.
Check
around three cells when it’s time to top up, or every after five charges to
know the fluid level is still good.
